Oil/U.S. Trade Deficit, Q&A Forums, HyperInflation?

Read ‘Oil/U.S. Trade Deficit, Q&A Forums, HyperInflation?’, e-mailed yesterday to StockResearchPortal.com Subscribers.  The e-mail:

  • links to an article that discusses the importance of U.S. imports of oil in the U.S. net monthly and annual trade deficit;
  • references two questions and answers posted to the StockResearachPortal.com Q&A Forums dealing with ‘Shareholder Rights Offerings’ and two oil companies, Petrobank and Petrominerales;
  • suggests, subject to qualifications (see below), that StockResearchPortal Subscribers consider researching Petrobank and Petrominerales;
  • links to an article on HyperInflation and as second article on the physical gold price and hyperinflation.
  • overviews the ‘Topically Segregated Press Releases’ feature offered by StockResearchPortal.com.

In part, the e-mail reads:

Oil/U.S. Trade Deficit

I strongly suggest you read an article published yesterday titled ‘Foreign Oil Dependency:  The Root Cause of America’s Economic Pain’.  I have commented numerous times on what I see to be the importance of the continuing massive monthly net trade deficits being incurred month/month by the U.S.  This article goes some distance to explaining the role the world oil price plays in this ongoing ‘U.S. economic negative’.  Net Trade Deficits are not things that many people focus on or write about.  I have thought for some time they are a ‘root indicator’ – a fundamental starting point if you will – of the U.S.’s ongoing economic issues.  Accordingly, I recommend U.S. net trade deficits to be an ‘economic fundamental’ that you focus on each month as the latest reported month’s statistics come available.

Q&A Forums

Investment Education Forum:  What is a ‘Shareholder Rights Offering’, and how does such an Offering work? There is one Answer to date – click here to read it.  If have noticed in the past three months that at least two mining companies have made Shareholder Rights Offerings.  I consider Shareholder Rights Offerings a ‘fair and equitable’ way for a company to raise new equity.  If you are not familiar with Shareholder Rights Offerings I suggest you take the time to read these Q&A Posts.

Petrobank Energy and Resources, Ltd. Forum (accessible only by StockResearchPortal.com Subscribers):  Is the Petrobank spin out of Petrominerales bullish? – click here to read it.

Whether or not you read the question (and view expressed by the person who asked the question) with respect to Petrobank and Petrominerales you might consider researching both companies.  Both issued what I think were interesting Press Releases yesterday.  The Header of the Petrobank Press Release was “Petrobank Receives Final Regulatory Approval” and went on to say that at the company “received the final Alberta Environment (“AENV”) approval for our initial two well-pair THAI® (Oil Sands extraction process) Dawson project on November 23, 2010”.  The Header of the Petrominerales Press Release was “Petrominerales Caruto-1 Exploration Well Tests over 10,000 bopd”.  I currently own no Petrobank or Petrominerales shares, currently have no plans to buy any, have done very limited recent research on either company, and am not recommending you either buy or sell its stock.  Both companies are paid advertisers on StockResearchPortal.com.  All that said, if you are bullish on Canadian Oil Sands, the price of oil, are not overly concerned about the current state of the equity markets, and have not researched either Petrobank or Petromineralies, you might consider doing that.  Subscribers to StockResearchPortal.com who have ‘logged in’ can access data on Petrobank by clicking here, and on Petrominerales by clicking here.

HyperInflation?

Read ‘China Inflation, Q&A Forums, U.S. Debt, U.S. Dependency?’, e-mailed yesterday to StockResearchPortal.com Subscribers.  The e-mail:

  • links to an article that discusses China inflation prospects and their implications from a world perpsective;
  • references two questions and answers posted to the StockResearachPortal.com Q&A Forums dealing with Mining Company ‘Capital Raisings’ and pending mining related legislative changes in Chubut Province, Argentina;
  • suggests, subject to qualifications (see below), that StockResearchPortal Subscribers consider researching Pan American Silver (TSX:PAA);
  • links to an article on U.S. Debt that I think references some very shocking statistics on U.S. income and related consumer spending; and,
  • links to an article that discusses U.S. Service Industry Growth Dependency.

In part, the e-mail reads:

China Inflation

I suggest you read an article published yesterday titled ‘Time-Tested Wisdom: For Commodity Bulls, ‘Don’t Fight the Fed’ Becomes ‘Don’t Fight Beijing’ – reading time 4 minutes.  I found the title of the articles somewhat confusing as I read the text, as the article essentially focuses on commodity inflation in China and an expected increase (expected by Standard Charterd Bank) in Chinese interest rates by year-end – with more Chinese interest rate increases expected in the first half of 2011.  This, and I assume other research the author has done, causes the author (a trader) to anticipate (among other things) lower copper and other base metal prices, lower oil prices, and a higher U.S.$.  I think the article is worth reading, thinking about, and doing some of your own research on the potential of near-term inflation in China, and the effect that might have on commodity prices.

Q&A Forums Questions and Answers

Two recent StockResearchPortal Question/Answer Forums Posts you might find interesting are:

Mining Companies Valuation Forum:  What are the proceeds from Capital Raisings in the mining sector being used for?  There are two Answers (one quite detailed) to date – click here to read them.

Argentina Economic Forum:  What are the true expectations regarding the rumored pending legislative changes for mining in Chubut?  There is one Answer (again quite detailed) to date – click here to read it.

If you read the question and answer with respect to pending legislative changes in Chubut Province, Argentina, you will find several references to Pan American Silver Corp. (TSX:PAA).  I own no Pan American Silver, currently have no plans to buy any, have done only very limited research on that company to date, and am not recommending you either buy or sell its stock.  That said, if you are bullish on the price of physical silver, are not overly concerned about the current state of the equity markets, and have not researched Pan American Silver Corp. you might consider doing that.  Subscribers to StockResearchPortal.com who have ‘logged in’ can access data on Pan American Silver by clicking here.

U.S. Debt

A very brief article this morning – reading time 1 minute – titled ‘Debt Forgiveness May Be the Only Way Out for U.S.’:

says (relying on a ‘linked’ report that American’s who are in the top 5% of U.S. income earners collectively account for 37% of U.S. consumer spending, and that those in the bottom 80% of U.S. income earners collectively account for 39.5%.  I find these statistics to be an ‘off the charts’ from ….. – to read more click here

China/Russia, Q&A Forums, Commodity Prices, Ireland

Read ‘China/Russia, Q&A Forums, Commodity Prices, Ireland’, e-mailed yesterday to StockResearchPortal.com Subscribers.  The e-mail:

  • links to an article that discusses yesterday’s announcement the China and Russia plan to transact between their countries in renminbi (yen) and rubles, and a second article that reports Russian Prime Minister Putin appears interested in having a free trade agreement between Russia and the EuroZone;
  • links to three StockResearchPortal Q&A Forums Questions, two of which  relate to Oil & Gas Company valuation, and one of which relates to Mining Company valuation;
  • discusses the 12 month price rises in (mostly) agricultural commodities, and links to an article that includes a table of those price increases; and,
  • links to an article that further discusses the Irish financial problems, and questions whether the Irish could export their financial problems to other EuroZone countries.

In part, the e-mail reads:

China/Russia

An article today titled ‘China and Russia To Stop Using the U.S. Dollar For Mutual Trade! Who’s Next?’ follows up on yesterday’s report that China and Russia have announced they intend to begin to trade between themselves in renminbi and rubles.  At least one year ago I commented on several occasions on what I say as clear undercurrents rallying against retention in the long term of the U.S. $ as the World’s Reserve Currency.  The article reports that earlier this year Brazil and China announced they want to account for trade between them in renminbi and reals, and last year (which prompted my comments at the time) there was discussion around the Middle East Countries politicking to sell their oil in Euros rather than the U.S.$.  The unfolding story of the U.S.$ has to be one to watch closely.  So far, I have not seen commentary from the U.S. Federal Reserve, or any of the comparatively few economists I pay close attention to.  I suggest you read the referenced article – reading time 2 minutes.

In what I think is, for the time being at least, a non-related event, it was reported in an article Wednesday titled ‘Putin Envisions a Russia-EU Free Trade Zone’ that Russian Prime Minister Putin “would like to see” a free trade agreement between Russia and the EuroZone.

Q&A Forums Questions and Answers

Three recent StockResearchPortal Question/Answer Forums Posts you might find interesting are:

Mining Companies Valuation Forum:  I have heard that Capital Raising in the mining sector are on the rise.  Is this correct? (one Answer to date) – click here to read that Answer.

Commodity Prices

An article this morning titled ‘More Evidence of Inflation: Retailers Report Escalating Commodity Prices’ includes what I think is an interesting table that lists latest 1 month, 3 month and 12 month changes in select commodity prices – most of which are agricultural commodities.  The numbers reported in the table (which I haven’t verified) range from (12 month change) ….. – to read more click here

Ireland/The EuroZone, Junior Gold Drivers, Mining Takeovers

Read ‘Ireland/The EuroZone, Junior Gold Drivers, Mining Takeovers’, e-mailed yesterday to StockResearchPortal.com Subscribers.  The e-mail:

  • links to an article that discusses the ongoing financial problems faced by Ireland, the financial circumstance of Spain, and a ‘Sovereign Debt Contagion Model’ for 15 Eurozone countries and the United States;
  • references a answer posted to the StockResearachPortal.com Q&A Forums that responds to the question ‘What are the main drivers I should be looking to when researching a junior gold exploration company’, and includes a link to that answer;
  • links to an article that discusses what it refers to as ‘Mining’s Takeover Game; and,

In part, the e-mail reads:

Ireland/The EuroZone

You likely have noticed the number of articles and comments being made in the past week with respect to Ireland and its ongoing financial woes.  I strongly suggest you take the time to read an article this morning titled ‘Merkel (German Chancellor Angela Merkel) Points to ‘Serious’ Bailout Risk as Spanish Bonds Drop, Reggie Middleton says “Ya Damn Skippy” – Here’s How We Called It’ – reading time 8 minutes.  The article discusses ‘risks facing the euro’ highlighted this week by Ms. Merkel, and Germany’s ‘clear support for the euro’.  The article also highlights the financial circumstance of Spain, and includes a ‘Sovereign Debt Contagion Model (table) that includes 15 Eurozone countries and the U.S.  In my view all equity investors – resource or otherwise – ought to keep a watchful eye on the Irish story as it unfolds, with emphasis on how that story may affect the Eurozone generally, individual Euro countries specifically, and the equity and money markets.

You might also want to read two other articles this morning on the Irish situation titled ‘El-Erian: Ireland Is On The Verge Of A Horrible Bank Run That Will Devastate A Whole Generation’ – reading time 3 minutes, and ‘Spain and Portugal under fire as bond spreads hit record’ – reading time 1 minute.

Drivers To Review – Junior Gold Explorers

On Sunday I added a further answer to the Question ‘What are the main drivers I should be looking to when researching a junior gold exploration company?’ on StockResearchPortal’s Investment Education Forum.  If you are interested in 13 things I focus on, and my reasoning for focusing on each, you can review my answer here.

Mining’s Takeover Game

If you invest in mining equities I suggest you take the time to read ‘Opportunities in Mining’s Takeover Game’.  Published yesterday, reading time is 3 minutes.  The article discusses last’s week acquisition announcement by Caterpillar of Bucyrus, a mining equipment manufacturer.  From my own consulting experience I agree with the author’s comments on EBIT-DA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) multiples.  If Caterpillar paid 10.5 times  estimated 2011 EBIT-DA for Bucyrus, as I assess things ….. – to read more click here
